Rapid Application Development with CodeIgnitor and JQuery

I’ve been playing around with CodeIgnitor this past week.  It’s a pretty slick MVC framework for PHP.  I’m seriously thinking of retiring my custom framework for this purely for the sake of rapid development.

Who can make money in web development if you spend so much time writing supporting code for your projects?  The folks at CodeIgnitor have already done most of the heavy lifting for you.

If I combine CodeIgnitor PHP framework with the JQuery javascript library, I can pump out some pretty impressive, functional sites in short order.

I’ve been toying with the idea of writing a web-based controller for a Bit Torrent engine to replace Torrentflux.  This might be the perfect testing ground for these two technologies.

National Do Not Call List

Canada finally has a national “Do Not Call” list for telemarketers that went live earlier this month. When you register your phone number, it is supposed to reduce the number of unsolicited calls you get. It sounds great, but there are some serious flaws with the system.

The most ridiculous flaw in the system is the exemption list. Several types of organizations are exempt from having to respect the “Do Not Call” list. You’ll still get calls from registered charities, political parties, newspapers selling subscriptions…oh, and any company you’ve done business with in the past 18 months!

Gee. I think that’s about all of my telemarketing calls. What a crock! I think that all of these exemptions are bogus. I understand that companies you’ve dones business with in the past might have a legitimate reason for needing to call you, but they shouldn’t be allowed to contact you for marketing purposes.

I guess it can’t hurt to register your number, but you’re still going to have to ask those pesky telemarketers to stop calling your number!

My New Chrysler 300 Touring Edition

I know, I know. I just bought a City Jetta last November. Well, I traded it in for this 2007 Chrysler 300 because the Jetta was too small for my family. I’m a tall guy, and to sit comfortably, I needed to have my seat all the way back. That meant that my daughter’s legs were touching the seat-back. Not good.

I looked around for a couple of weeks, and I was pretty set on getting something like a Ford Escape, but I just couldn’t find anything in my price range. So, I started looking at larger cars, and this is what I found. The best part is that my financing stayed pretty much the same, which means I got a wicked deal.
