Canada finally has a national “Do Not Call” list for telemarketers that went live earlier this month. When you register your phone number, it is supposed to reduce the number of unsolicited calls you get. It sounds great, but there are some serious flaws with the system.
The most ridiculous flaw in the system is the exemption list. Several types of organizations are exempt from having to respect the “Do Not Call” list. You’ll still get calls from registered charities, political parties, newspapers selling subscriptions…oh, and any company you’ve done business with in the past 18 months!
Gee. I think that’s about all of my telemarketing calls. What a crock! I think that all of these exemptions are bogus. I understand that companies you’ve dones business with in the past might have a legitimate reason for needing to call you, but they shouldn’t be allowed to contact you for marketing purposes.
I guess it can’t hurt to register your number, but you’re still going to have to ask those pesky telemarketers to stop calling your number!
